READER PROGRAM
The
Accelerated Reader program is an integral part of reading at Gleason
School. In grades K-12, students are encouraged to read with reading
incentives and Accelerated Reading points. Each year, prizes are
awarded to students from each grade who earn the most Accelerated
Reader points.
The 90%+ CHALLENGE - This year, to qualify to compete in the A.R. Point competition, a student must have earned a 90% or better cumulative comprehension score on A.R. tests throughout the year. Each time a student takes a test, they receive a comprehension (percentage) score, as well as
A.R. points if they passed the test. The computer figures the average percentage score for each student per school year, and this year we are shooting for 90% or above. This is a lofty goal, but it is attainable. The 90% Challenge is promoted by the Accelerated Reader Company as well, to emphasize the QUALITY (percentage score) of reading, as well as the QUANTITY (A.R. points) of reading. This also helps to ensure that students are reading for comprehension, not just skimming the book. TO WIN A TROPHY, A STUDENT MUST HAVE EARNED A 90%+ COMPREHENSION SCORE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND BE ONE OF THE TOP 3 POINT EARNERS IN THEIR CLASSROOM.
All
Accelerated Reader point winners are featured in the local newspapers,
as well as the school yearbook.
